NEWS UPDATE: City of Sturgis Holds Post-Rally Summit.

 

STURGIS, SD - On October 3rd, the City of Sturgis held their annual Post-Rally Summit meeting. City officials along with representatives from the South Dakota Department of Tourism and the Black Hills and Badlands Tourism Association presented information about Rally marketing efforts, Rally attendee demographics, and economic impacts. During the meeting the official attendance number along with promotional goals for the 2020 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally were also shared with the public.

 

  • The official estimated attendance at the 2019 Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ was 490,000. This was 5,000 less than the 2018 Rally which was the second largest Rally in the last 10-years.

  • Total economic impact of the Rally $655,090,103.

  • At least $132,076 was raised for local and national non-profits. This includes funds raised at City events such as the Mayor’s Ride as well as charity events held at private venues. The Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ is often a significant funding source for many local non-profit agencies.

 

The following information about attendees is based on 3,724 random surveys that were conducted immediately prior to and during the 10-day event.

  • Average age of attendees in 2019 was 54.

  • 57% of attendees previously attended the Rally at least 5 times.

  • 23% of attendees were here for the first time in 2019.

  • 81% of those surveyed, plan to return in 2020.

  • The majority of visitors stayed in the Black Hills area 4-6 days.

  • Over 48% of attendees stayed at a campground. 18% stayed in a hotel/motel.

  • 54% of attendees stated they rode their motorcycle to the event.

  • 12% of attendees do not currently own a motorcycle.

 

The Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ is a 10-day event held each year in Sturgis, South Dakota. The 80th Anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will take place August 7-16, 2020. Links to the Post-Rally Summit presentations and more information about the 2020 Rally can be found at
